Art Appreciation - 58-101: Fall 2008

Instructor: John X. Christ
email: John_Christ@uml.edu

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to the appreciation and interpretation of the visual arts. Lectures are organized to develop an understanding of both the methods by which to analyze and interpret works of art and the important functions that the visual arts play in society. This course is not intended as a survey of Western or even global art; instead the tools with which to approach and understand works of art are presented through the examination of a series of case-studies taken from diverse historical periods and geographic regions. In learning how to critically engage with works of art as both material objects and acts of communication, students develop an appreciation of the diversity of visual languages and the visual literacy necessary to navigate contemporary culture.
